Minister gives her backing to Rural Support
By Staff Reporter

MINISTER of Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew recently met with Board Members, staff and volunteers from Rural Support. Rural Support is a charitable organisation that is part funded by the Department of Agriculture. Its purpose is to provide a listening ear and support service to farm families and rural dwellers who call their confidential 24 hour helpline. The charity is fortunate enough to have a team of highly skilled volunteers who are trained to provide clients with the support and help they need whether it be of an emotional, practical or technical nature and are also a signposting service for other helping organisations across Northern Ireland. Ms Gildernew said "Rural Support provide a vital service to farm families and rural dwellers across the North. At a time when many families are feeling the effects of the credit crunch, people may be unsure of where they can go to get help. I would urge people to get in touch with Rural Support, who can provide advice on dealing with a whole range of issues affecting rural communities." Fionnuala McGoldrick, Rural Support’s recently appointed Outreach and Promotions Officer has been attending agricultural shows throughout Northern Ireland and the feedback speaks for itself. She said: “People have been indicating to me that problems around inheritance issues are a major source of concern for them. Some are worried about their families being crippled with inheritance tax whilst others may have no one to pass their land on to due to family circumstances or a lack of enthusiasm or interest from the younger generation.”
