Irish farmers smash combine world record
By Chris McCullough
A NEW Guinness World Record has been set by a bunch of Irish farmers who managed to gather 175 combines working together in one field in County Meath.
The previous official record of 56 was achieved in December 2003 in Australia, but unofficially there was another attempt in Canada which reached 105, but it was never registered.
On Saturday August 15 at 5pm the mass of 175 Irish combines started to harvest 110 acres, and managed to do so in 13 minutes! Guinness World Records insisted each combine had to work for five minutes in order for the record to be authenticated.
Once the helicopter flew over to signal the start of the record attempt, combines started their engines and moved through the wheat and in under 15 minutes, with 175 combines working simultaneously, the record was set.
Claas combines seemed to dominate the line-up, of which the majority was modern combines. However, a few old-timers did certify their part in the world record including an old 1966 New Holland Clayson driven by Alex Hutcheson from County Dublin.
Several new combines also took part including a brand new John Deere 8350i and a Class Lexion with 20 foot header.
Organisers were delighted with the efforts put in by combine owners from all corners of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
