Irish feed mill claims sugar beet was never contaminated
By Chris McCullough

THE Irish feed company responsible for importing the allegedly lead-laden sugar beet pulp has hit back at DARD and said the feed was NEVER contaminated.

Tony Markey, senior trader with Arkady Feed Limited in Dublin, contacted FarmWeek in response to the front page news story on June 12 entitled 'Feed Alert.'

Mr Markey said: "In response to your articles we would like to say that, as far as we the importers are concerned, no questions remain unanswered regarding this issue.

"The imported sugar beet pulp in question was not contaminated before it left Austria, nor was it contaminated in transit, nor indeed was it contaminated here in Ireland, because, in fact, it was not contaminated at all.

"The sugar beet pulp has been rigorously tested in various laboratories and all tests have shown the lead levels to be well below the allowable thresholds.

"Yes, farmers do have a right to be angry, because they were dragged through the mud for a whole week for feeding sugar beet pulp to animals that was allegedly contaminated with lead, when in fact, it was not."

FarmWeek contacted DARD on the claims from the supplier but the department said it stood by their its initial statement saying: "A routine test of unmolassed sugar beet rolls from a Northern Ireland intermediate store gave a value for lead in excess of the legal limit."
